After examining her he announced that she needed to be put down. I heard a single gunshot! I was terrified! I was allowed to stay home that day and kept in the house. A while later a truck arrived and pulled Bessie's hulk onto it to be taken to a rendering plant where she would be made into dog food!
A few years later I learned that her bloating was likely the result of my carelessness in putting too much hay in the trough for her to feed on that previous evening!
I was eleven years old at the time. Sixty nine years later I still think of Old Bessie!
These are the lessons of life that we all grow through and make us what we are.
