"That's why this New York Times tape is so troubling, because what's been reported is Donald told the editorial board of The New York Times, 'What I'm saying on immigration, I don't believe. I'm not going to build a wall, I'm not going to deport people,' this is all just rhetoric for the voters," Cruz said.
"If he didn't say that, he has an easy solution -- simply release the tape."
Trump struck back when Cruz repeated the attack a few minutes later.
"You're the lying guy up here. You're the one, you're the one," Trump said.
"I've given my answer, Lying Ted. I've given my answer."
He then repeated this line over and over at each rally.
The truth behind the comment Cruz brought up is supported by another interview in which Trump was asked: "What do you mean by Make America Great Again..." and he answered: "It's a fantasy...people want a fantasy."
Authoritarians use fantasies (otherwise known as lies when presented straight) to seduce and hypnotize their followers.
My essay draws on the work of many thinkers, from the Hobbes and Machiavelli to 20th Century philosophers like Eric Fromm and many in between. The focus of this essay is to understand the roots of a man like Donald Trump, how he sees the world and attracts followers, and equally to understand why ordinary people will be drawn to a man like moths to light.
