The boys on the Cannon Street all-stars went on with their lives, abandoning their dreams, as so many other black kids did.

In 2002, several members of the Cannon Street all-stars returned to Williamsport and were presented with a banner proclaiming them the 1955 State Champions of South Carolina.

I hope Little League Baseball remembers the Cannon Street team again this year -- and the next year, and the year after that.

John Rivers, who played for the team and then became a successful architect, summarized the moral of the story as follows: "It's a tragedy to take dreams away from youngsters. I knew it then. I know it now. And I've seen to it that no one takes dreams away from me again."

Chris Lamb is writing a book about the 1955 Cannon Street all-stars.
