Democracy is an organic part of the soil of the earth, it is a native plant. Like grass and other common plants, it continues to thrive in spite of the many attempts to exterminate it or subdue it. During the last few centuries, those in power, began to recognize it as a reality that had to be dealt with. However, they quickly discovered ways to exploit the power of popular support to wage their wars, continue to expand their power and accomplish their economic goals.
Soon, the ordinary citizens began to understand that they were being abused and exploited for the goals of others, and they began to insist on a larger role"a voice. However, the system created by those in power did not really allow a place for the ordinary citizens, so those in power became better at the smoke and mirrors of popular manipulation to continue to assure, at least tacit support.
Finally, the sacrifices became too great, the rewards too few, and the ordinary folks began to see through the smoke and mirrors to understand the realities of the system and to recognize that it was no longer relevant or vital. The old political structure was dying and a different system was needed, a new paradigm. Not to embrace the change was to choose to die with the old system, being sacrificed to extend the life of a dying beast.
The coming of the new Millennium was only one of the signals that it was time for change. Although this new millennium began with a harsh imposition of blatant power by the existing system, it was clear that it exposed more about its weaknesses and eventual demise, than about its strengths and advantages.
The young saw this most clearly, although there were many older folks who had recognized the symptoms even earlier. Those within the walled citadel of power did not see what was coming; they did not see the handwriting on the wall. Part of the reason is that the handwriting on the wall was on the outside of the wall for all the ordinary people to see, while those within remained clueless.
What will it take to nurse a renewed democracy back to life? It will take enormous work and determination. It will take unity, courage, focus, vigilance, sustained effort and endurance. There will be losses and sacrifices which will test our resolve and our unity. There will be battles lost and battles won. However, the vision will stay clear and compelling and the focus will be on the prize of a once again humanized democracy.
Something's coming and it will be about nothing less than the salvation of the human race, the nation, the world and the planet"sustainable once again.
