And yet, this test serves as proof of how far we've come. Not only is this the opposite of what we've seen for so long -- a compact, efficient vehicle being powered by a computer-based system -- but it was successful on an active roadway with real traffic nearby. More tests are certainly in order to ensure the system can function as needed in all potential scenarios, but we're closer than ever to seeing these things driving in the next lane over.

Eventually, self-driving vehicles will be just another piece of tech in our daily lives.
