An example of such a process might be seen in an exercise in changing the culture of a large office. One way might be to pick out those who are most resistant to any change and try to logically show them the value of change; perhaps the curmudgeons in the corner with the best windows, who have been there forever.

An alternative would be to start at another place in the office with those who are most positive and who seem to find a kind of joy in their work. Their positivity and joy are somewhat contagious and every Friday, late in the afternoon, one of them brings cake for anyone who might want some.

Friday afternoons soon are filled with anticipation and finally a kind of communal spirit that seems to come with the cake. Eventually, others offer to bring some cake too.

These celebrations grow weekly and eventually even one of the curmudgeons stops by for some cake to bring back to his desk in the corner and soon they all are participating, and the office culture has been totally changed.

So how does the journey begin and what are the first steps? There is no prescribed path; you can use whatever path is available, perhaps the one you travel on every day without thinking about it. The steps are ordinary and common only now done with clearer intent and purpose. One step might be being attentive when you say goodbye to your family in the morning. Another idea might be focusing on the pleasure of gardening. Another might be asking the checkout person at the grocery store how their day has been, or complimenting someone on their smile, or their sweater. It might be to remember to thank someone for a kindness or taking the time to notice the seasonal change of nature, or attending to a song you like, or sharing in any one of a thousand ways. There are endless possibilities and each one is a step on the journey of a lifetime, and everyone is invited.

All of these steps, and many more, take not only you, but also the entire planet, on a journey back toward a saner world, while also restoring humanity, as well as feeding your soul and the souls of those around you.
