1. He settled it before congress could get their teeth into it: if Trump was found to have defrauded people in a civil case, Congress could start an investigation into his finances - resulting in Congress issuing a subpoena of his tax returns.
2. He can apply the deduction to a year in the future where it would (ostensibly) cover his personal income.
3. He has no admission of guilt - the same position that he and his father took when sued by the Department of Justice for housing discrimination and was represented by none other than Roy Cohn.
4. It will keep him from testifying on the case in San Diego.
5. It will seal the lips of everyone involved.
