Indeed, we don't even realize they connect at a base!
Cognitively, we are more about generating ideas than emptying our minds. Thus the Tao Te Ching teaches us to be unconditioned whereas the thrust in the west is to condition us into obeying.
Republicans (the extreme epitome of male consciousness) is a mirror to the Democrats (a little more feminine on the surface, but still highly male). These exist in relation to a larger philosophy of looking at life called dualism. Dualism believes the world is a battleground and that opposites are at war with one another. Thus they do not see the individual fingers connecting at their base. They don't see fingers as aspects of the same hand.
From an epistemological perspective, it is right that the male be interested in division. Upon the sperm's entry into the egg, the egg begins to divide into various cells and becomes a baby. Division is also the first act of Genesis when God says "let there be light," which then creates a bifurcation of light (manifest world) and dark (unmanifest). In the Bible this unmamifest is the feminine noun Tehom (in English translations, the Waters) which is synonymous in definition to the name of Christ's Mother, Marie (Ocean) who then gives birth to the "light of the world" as per the Book of John 1:14.
Thus it could be interpreted that when the Spirit came upon Marie in the New Testament the Spirit moved out over the face of the Waters in the Old.
Can the unmanifest (dark) be separate from the manifest (light)? How can a valley be at war with the mountain? How can the space between fingers be at war with the fingers? How can the right brain be at war with the left?
This moment is the unmanifest coming into manifestation. Physicist David Bohm calls this Order the Unmanifest Implicate Order. Implicate implies implied. Thus the Unmanifest is where the Manifest is implied but not explicit. It exists in potential.
For example, you are sitting at your computer screen and are currently on this sentence. A few moments ago, this moment existed in potential. It was unmanifest. Now, the Light is shone upon it and wa-la, you're reading my words. "Let there be light," means let these words manifest. Yet, underneath this is the Unmanifest which contains infinite potential. Read the next paragraph to see what happens next. The words are there in potential, you just haven't read them. Your Psyche has not lit them up.
The right side of the brain is associated with highly creative and artistic types. Creativity allows the unformed and even chaotic impulses of the Unmanifest to erupt into consciousness without a whole lot of censorship. This arena of consciousness oftentimes produce results that are not of the status quo.
Artists who tend to challenge the mores of traditional society oftentimes are ridiculed. For example, there were a lot of eyebrows raised when the Beatles went beyond songs like "I Want to Hold Your Hand" to "A Day in the Life." The former at worse was just laughed off as teeny boper nonsense, whereas the latter type of song raised the ere of some caught up in the traditional ways of seeing life in Western Civilization.
How dare these artist types question our world through existential poetry!
Creativity challenges and changes the world because it dances across the waves of what has yet to be created. Thus it is dangerous. It speaks to more than revolution. It speaks to evolution and evolution requires change...off the wall change.
Even the Bible realizes this in its Book "Hagia Sophia" (which is taken out in many versions) where Sophia (Wisdom) is seen as the agent of change. Thus the Book speaks, "Herself unchanging, She renews the world."
This is why the church fired Sophia. Think of the absurdity of this. The church fired Wisdom! It wasn't just because She was a Goddess. It was because She challenged the status quo.
This is the danger of going into the Unmanifest. There is infinite potential there. Thus going there challenges the status quo.
The Taoist Chuangtse also challenges the status quo. He states that horses feed on grass and drink water and fling up their tales and gallop. This is their Nature. To illustrate what happens when a being is kept from acting in accordance to his or her Nature, he tells the story of a horse trainer named Polo.
