Even the Democratic Party’s base is realizing that they've been played:

“It's almost as if all Rockefeller's talk prior to the 2006 elections about wanting to uncover the facts had more to do with the elections than any actual interest in accountability. It's almost as if the Senator assumes we've all forgotten. Maybe we have. Has a single reporter asked him where in the world, these nine months later, Phase II is, or why in the world it has been phased out?”

David Swanson is a serious leader of the anti-war movement, a great representative of the Democratic Party’s anti-war base, and that base is now saying the exact same thing that a far right conservative pundit like Sean Hannity was saying years ago. Recall the famous Rockefeller Memo…

[Transcript of a memo written by a Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee staff suggesting how to make the greatest gain off of intelligence data leading to the war against Iraq]

“We have carefully reviewed our options under the rules and believe we have identified the best approach. Our plan is as follows: 1) Pull the majority along as far as we can on issues that may lead to major new disclosures regarding improper or questionable conduct by administration officials...”

To be able to run for re-election in 2008, Democratic Congressional candidates have to get the issue off the table – or successfully distract and deflect from it – in the next 12 months or be faced to defend their lies, or their ineptitude, or both.

But...why defend it at all? Troop withdrawals are already scheduled for next spring with more likely to be announced in the summer. Why demand a withdrawal when one is happening? Sure, Democrats have done that in the past. Back in December 2005 Senator Kerry “demanded” that 20,000 American forces immediately be withdrawn after the 2005 elections (a demand made while the long-scheduled withdrawal was already taking place). The smart political play would be for Democrats to claim success (as Senator Kerry tried), but that would mean putting out the fire that burns in the pockets of fervent anti-war groups and supporters’ pockets. Months or weeks from a national election, it’s extremely hard to envision politicians turning off the fuel that feeds their campaigns – especially Democrats and the lifeblood that is their most ardent anti-war base.

The DNC might not have a choice. Despite every possible effort to politically support the enemy’s objective in Iraq, despite the most biased, unsupportive, collaborative, and seditious media coverage in American history, the truth of success in Iraq is making its way to the American people. Violence is on the decline in Iraq with civilian and military deaths on a downward trend thanks to the surge in troops and the addition of General Petraeus.
