They cannot comprehend that from an economic standpoint it makes sense to provide healthcare.
Because of corporate funded media spin, what they see is that you are taking money from them and probably giving it to some illegal immigrant or pregnant teen or some other form of "lowlife". Not understanding that rich and poor suffer from not having healthcare. People that have worked all their lives can lose everything they have worked for if someone in their family gets ill. At some time in your lifetime, you and/or your family members will most certainly benefit from universal healthcare.
Unlike what you might believe listening to Republicans, a lot of hard-working people fall on hard times and are in need of assistance until they are back on their feet.
Republicans and the Tea Party complain about government providing social programs like food stamps and unemployment benefits (or extending unemployment benefits) and yet these programs stimulate the economy at a FAR FAR greater return than cutting taxes on the wealthy who typically save their extra money instead of buying goods and services. One dollar for food stamp benefits or UI returns over $1.50 to the economy - while tax cuts earn a measly $1.02 return to the economy. These programs also help keep people working. People that supply food, stores, drivers, manufacturing, automotive, etc. are benefited by these programs - which means there are more people working and paying taxes.
It may seem like an oxymoron to the Tea Partiers that the government and Americans benefit from helping the poor - but it is simple economics (Economics 101 so-to-speak) to anyone educated or willing to do the research especially during a recession. The last thing you want to do is cut jobs or social programs in a recession.
This is according to economic research firm Moody's - in a report done for the Bush administration. You can view the full report here: click here
