This is one (conscious or unconscious) reason psychedelics were banned.

Philip Slater:
"Concentration of power equals abuse of power for the only way not to abuse power is to share it. Such concentrations are blood clots in the circulatory system of society. When an artery becomes clogged, blood doesn't get to the brain or the heart and people have strokes and heart attacks.
"Concentrations of power and wealth have a similar effect on the body politic. The circulation of wealth, resources, and, especially, ideas, is blocked. In a healthy system, information flows are unimpeded by clots of power or the sclerosis of hierarchy."
In this fresh worldview, we are invited to realize our potential as humans, not as the dominating species, but a species connected to everything -and everyone - else. Those who are attached to power over other cannot abide this is a state of affairs. Yet, it is the key to our survival as a species.

Fortunately, there are other means to experience this deep sense of oneness and profound equality. These include all of the "eight limbs" of yoga (including hatha yoga); the practice of meditation (including "insight/vipassana," and many Tibetan forms of meditation and contemplation); reading or listening to the words of enlightened beings (including Meister Eckhart, the Baal Sham Tov, Rumi, Sri Aurobindo, Ramana Maharishi, Neem Karoli Baba, Ananda Mayi Ma); meeting contemporary masters, such as Rupert Spira, Eckhart Tolle, and Ammachi. When we realize that 1) all aspects of our universe are vibrational; and 2) there many more vibrational frequencies than those that are material, we perform these practices in order to imbibe and align our own vibration to a "higher octave."
It is common for a desire to be of service to arise, especially if we are able to comprehend the true "planetary emergency" through which we are living. We begin to search for ways we might contribute to alleviating suffering. For one person, it might be addressing homelessness in America; for another, taking on rampant hunger in other countries; for another, consciously raising a family; for yet another, attempting to attain and share a more lucid understanding of our predicament.
