At this moment establishment media and the those in support of the Democrats in the alternative media, and the establishment politicians are all in a tizzy over Trump asking Russia to see if they can find Hillary's missing emails. As usual they miss the point.
It was really Trump doing what Trump does...Trolling. That is his thing and that is why he gets so much support. The rest of the political establishment stays within certain unspoken boundaries, those boundaries are well-defined and different for the Republicans and Democrats.
For the Republicans they keep their "allowable" dialogue within certain parameters which if spoken by a Democrat would be criticized as either sexist, racist, fascist, and so on. And vice versa, for example if a Republican says something like "Abortion should be allowable under certain circumstances" then that is playing with fire with their allowable speech and many will turn on them. Or if a Democrat says "We need to check more closely within Islamic dogma to help us solve the terrorist problem," then that is playing with fire and many will call them Islamophobic, as was seen with Tulsi Gabbard.
Now, most ordinary people are not so circumspect with their speech, and they do not like the concept of "allowable speech" promoted by the culture of the Republicans or Democrats. Trump figured that out early on in his campaign when he would get reactions to things he said that were outside of the box of "allowable speech by Republicans." He saw that most people didn't care and were actually happy to see him flaunt the "politically correct" box that both parties operate within. So he went in that direction - basically his modus operandi ever since is to troll the political establishment, of both parties.
That brings us to the current trolling over the emails and Russia's supposed involvement. He could see the obvious truth like everyone else that the Democrat response was to try and deflect away from the contents of the leaks onto Putin, i.e. the new "Red Menace." The media, which is in the bag for the Democrats, were only too eager to play along and push the faux outrage over the Russia angle, even though everyone knows the biggest hackers are the NSA ever since the whole Snowden thing. So everyone in the public knows it is just a bunch of haymaking for political gain to take away focus from the content of the emails - the DNC working against Sanders - but the media is playing it straight faced about "The Red Menace" as if Putin is some Bond super villain and Russia is SPECTRE or HYDRA. And therefore Trump sees the perfect trolling opportunity. Instead of going along with the faux outrage he gives support to Russia!
That is why Trump has his following. They see Trump willing to ignore the politically correct box the establishment tries to force on everyone, and not only ignore it, but delight in trolling them. His support isn't about his policies, it is about hating on the establishment. That is why his policies are not a problem for his supporters - like Trump said, he could do anything and it wouldn't matter. It is his trolling the establishment which delights his followers.
