In the wake of the recent ruling by the Indiana Supreme Court in the case of Barnes V. STATE of INDIANA that states citizens have no right to resist unlawful police entry into their homes (even though the Fourth Amendment to the US Constitution says otherwise), Newton County, Ind., Sheriff Don Hartman Sr. allegedly told a reporter in a phone interview that he believes the ruling gives officers the right to conduct random house-to-house searches, even without any probable cause or a warrant.
According to reports, Hartman was asked three times to clarify his statements, each time indicating that he would conduct door-to-door searches without a warrant if he felt it was necessary to do so. He allegedly even stated that he believes citizens would welcome the searches with open arms if it meant potentially catching a criminal.
Both Hartman's statements and the ruling itself are together a chilling omen to the death of the once great republic known as the United States of America. A seasoned officer, who at one time swore to uphold both the US Constitution and the Constitution of his state, is now blatantly supporting tyranny in the name of safety and security. And several state justices, who are among the most highly trained in American law, now openly support flagrantly unconstitutional policies.
According to WISH TV 8 in Indianapolis, the attorney representing the husband involved in the original case against whom the ruling was made plans to fight the court's decision by petitioning for a rehearing, and will even go as far as the US Supreme Court if necessary.
