John F. Kennedy famously declared, "In the Chinese language, the word 'crisis' is composed of two characters, one representing danger and the other, opportunity,"
Putin has created a crisis by threatening nuclear war. NATO is being very careful not to trigger this threat. The danger is clear.
The threat of nuclear war has been deeply buried in public consciousness since the Cold War of the 1950's and 60's. We all suffer from psychic numbing, although the threat has never diminished.
Putin's threats have made headline news, and reawakened the world to this danger.
We now have the opportunity to push for nuclear disarmament.
On 22 January 2021, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), or the Nuclear Weapon Ban Treaty went into effect. It is the first legally binding international agreement to comprehensively prohibit nuclear weapons with the ultimate goal being their total elimination. It now has signatures of 86 nations.
However, none of the major nuclear powers nuclear have ratified it. The vast majority of the signatory nations are in the southern hemisphere. The only European signers are Austria, Lichtenstein, Ireland, Malta, San Marino, and the Holy See.
The mainstream news is based in nations with nuclear weapons, who have no intention of joining a treaty which bans nukes altogether, although most have signed the NPT- see below. So it is not surprising that news articles about the whole issue of nuclear weapons is suppressed. This is coupled with the almost universal desire to avoid thinking about the painful subject of annihilation of life, which an all-out nuclear exchange might lead to.
