As the saying goes - one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter...
Faced with a growing revolt in the East, including the killing of a member of the security forces, the nationalist Ukrainian regime, together with its USA, NATO and EU sponsors, has decided that violent protest is not such a good idea after all.
According to the (http://www.kyivpost.com/content/ukraine/turchynov-blames-russia-for-organizing-terrorist-troops-in-ukraines-eastern-regions-343310.html) Kiev Post Olexander Turchinov, the 'president' of the Ukrainian post- coup regime, declared on Sunday 13th April that the National Security and Defence Council had decided that it would launch a large-scale anti-terrorist operation involving the armed forces of Ukraine, unless the occupations ended and the rebels disarmed by Monday morning. Turchinov claimed that Russia was entirely to blame for the disorder and violence.
Later that day, in an unscheduled and urgently convened UN Security Council meeting, Samantha Power, US ambassador to the UN, also claimed that the attacks in Eastern Ukraine were planned and coordinated by Russia, and that (http://edition.cnn.com/2014/04/13/world/europe/ukraine-crisis/) 'there's nothing grass roots seeming about it(sic)'. This despite the fact that there has been an entirely 'grass roots seeming' rebellion developing in East Ukraine ever since the violent overthrow of the legal regime by foreign-sponsored protestors on February 22nd. Since then hundreds and thousands of people have taken to the streets in Kharkiv, Donetsk and the surrounding towns and cities to protest against a regime that the USA, EU and NATO know full well is deeply offensive to large sections of the Russian-speaking, anti-fascist working class in the industrial Eastern Ukraine.
By her comments, Samantha Power, the UN ambassador for a nation that is globally renowned, and justly so, for 'planning and coordinating' extreme and deadly violence in the pursuit of its 'national' (read imperial) interests, demonstrated the same extraordinary lack of irony (and poor use of English) that has plagued Kerry during the Ukraine crisis. After the secession of Crimea, Kerry famously claimed that (http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/03/02/us-ukraine-crisis-usa-kerry-idUSBREA210DG20140302) 'you just don't in the 21st century behave in a 19th century fashion by invading another country on completely trumped-up pretext'. You can't make this stuff up!
The deadline has passed and the threat to crush the Eastern rebellion has not yet been carried out. There is no doubt this is entirely down to the determined opposition of the Russian state to the USA/EU/NATO sponsored coup.
Interestingly, on the very same day that Turchinov and Power were fulminating about foreign-sponsored regime destabilisation, someone who knows all about these things made some interesting comments. Victor Yanukovich, the little-loved former President of Ukraine who was overthrown by an extra-parliamentary coup sponsored by 'foreign powers' (http://www.kyivpost.com/content/ukraine/yanukovych-speaking-from-exile-in-russia-denounces-kyiv-criminal-clique-343326.html), claimed that CIA Director John Brennan had recently visited Ukraine and advised the President and the Interior Minister about how to deal with the risings in the East. Who would have thought it!
The National Security and Defence Council is headed by Andriy Parubiy, the former commander of the neo-nazi paramilitary group - 'P atriots of Ukraine'. If Turchinov does use it to put down the occupations in the East, the result could be the secession of key areas of East Ukraine with full political and logistical support from Russia. This could inaugurate a generation of proxy hostilities and economic warfare between on the one hand the USA/EU/NATO bloc, and on the other Russia and her allies from amongst the CIS, Eurasian Union, SCO and CSTO blocs.
Given USA/EU/NATO goals to contain China and Iran, it is unlikely they would endanger the broader strategy by pushing Russia over the edge. But the world is closer to war now than it was on February 21st, and this highlights the criminal irresponsibility of the USA/EU/NATO gang in aggressively sponsoring and promoting the Ukrainian coup. It is clear, and has always been Russia's position, that when the USA/EU/NATO supported the Pravy Sektor fascists in their rejection of the February 21st agreement, they acted with extreme and callous disregard for regional and global peace.
Who knows - maybe the world was actually a safer place when the USA/EU/NATO was contained by the Soviet bloc....
