James Earl Carter Jr. born October 1, 1924, died on December 29, 2024, in Plains, GA. He had entered hpospice care in February 2023.

A Democrat, Carter was 39th president of the United States, from 1977 to 1981. He was the first former president to become a centenarian, turning 100 on October 1, 2024. Two weeks later he announced that he had voted by mail for Kamala Harris in the 2024 Presidential election.

After being elected President, one of Carter's well known first acts was the fulfillment of a campaign promise to issue an executive order declaring unconditional amnesty for Vietnam War-era draft evaders, Proclamation 4483.

In 2002 he received a Nobel Peace Prize for his work with the Carter Center, a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization which he and Rosalyn founded in 1982 in partnership with Emory University.

The Nobel Committee cited "his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development."

Three other presidents were recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize: Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and Barack Obama.

Carter married Rosalynn Smith on July 7, 1946, they were married 77 years. After her death on November 19, 2023, Carter said, "Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished. She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me."

Due to passing away before January 20, 2025, the presidential response Carter receives will assuredly be dignified and respectful, as he deserves.

A future President may say something really memorable such as: I came. I saw. I praised not. I buried # 45/47. Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Dead Sea

So glad that this memorial will be planned on Biden's watch.

It's fitting, too--I hadn't realized that Joe Bden was the first Senator to support Carter running for persident.

Too bad Joe won't realize or remember any of this. Yes, that's where we are folks, and all of your fond memories of the Democratic Party won't change what they have become.

He was a decent man But decent man is not a profession. In the critical moments of political history he reversed to neutrality. Imagine Carter openly coming out against the invasion of Iraq? Imagine him joining Vincent Bugliosi?

Carter was in good company with Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Barack Obama. See "Don't Deify Jimmy Carter", by Chris Hedges.

Legacy of the late President Carter

There are many events in the Middle East which are associated with President Carter's presidency. Since I was born in Iran, I should tell you the impact of his kindness and short comings on our lives.

The first time I noticed his impact on Iran was when I was able to buy a book in Tehran without the Shah's notorious secret service's interference. For many years Iranian people were suffering from his majesty's oppression. When President Carter got into office he pushed the idea of human rights into the Shah's throat. The concept of freedom was far away for us. It was a breeze of fresh air when we heard that the new American president is concerned about us.

Then there was the shah's visit to Washington . The Shah wanted to make peace with Carter and get his approval for additional armaments and the bomb. I was there when we demonstrated against Shah's visit and dictatorship. It was a mess, police used tear gas to disperse us. The wind took the gas to Whitehouse grounds, President Carter, shah, their wives and everyone else end up crying on the camera.

Meanwhile The President was able to achieve the Camp David Accord in Washington .That event brought the lasting peace between Egypt and Israel. Although the Camp David Accord was the President's best achievement, it has been lost among other events of the Middle East.

President Carter's push for human rights around the world caused Iranian intellectuals to conduct poetry gatherings of 1977 followed by demonstrations and other acts of peaceful resistance which blow up in everyone's face. In retrospect no one in the world knew that the Shah was so badly hated. Things in Iran evolved to an all-out revolution. President Carter and Iranian people made a series of errors which led to the Hostage Crisis and his loss of presidency.

I do not want to rehash his errors while we are talking about his death. However to make peace with him, I should say that he was a good man who genuinely believed in human rights and achieved a lot for oppressed people of the world.

May be the world was not ready for him, or maybe, he just was not cut out to have the job of presidency which requires to do more cruel things than he wished to do.
