I received an email from Bernie Sanders' offices discussing his single-payer proposal and asking me to support it to my own representatives.
Here's what I wrote:
Please support Bernie Sanders and his "Single Payer" healthcare bill. Most of the citizens of this country support it, and those who don't, don't seem to know about it. 70% of all physicians support it.
The only people who don't support it are Chairman Baucus, the pharmaceutical companies, and the insurance companies.
Vested interests such as health insurance corporations have absolutely no place in the discussion of the healthcare needs of the nation's citizens, any more than arms manufacturers should have a say in whether or not the nation goes to war, Dieboldt should decide who gets to vote, or Monsanto should decide what people can grow or eat. Their interests have nothing to do with the interests of the citizens of this country, which it is your job to represent.
As vested interests, they are extraneous to the conversation, not central to it. The large quantities of money they are spending in an effort to influence the decision making process directly illustrates that point.
