I highlight the nuclear issue because radioactivity damages, and eventually kills, the DNA of all living creatures. Global warming forces major ecological shifts, chemical and plastic pollution kill life in their vicinity for a while, but nuclear pollution goes on forever. It bio-accumulates; its damage multiplies through the generations, and eventually kills.
The millions, perhaps billions, of us who are fighting for life, are winning some key battles. We've preserved internet neutrality, which is crucial. It is the internet which allows us to stay aware of fast-moving current events, communicate with each other, and express our collective will via mass petitions and campaigns.
We've also won the battle, at least
temporarily, against the TTP (Trans Pacifc Partnership), which would allow
corporations to supersede national sovereignty.
This is also crucial, because governments, theoretically, are
accountable to the people, whereas corporations are accountable only to their
stockholders. Governments, at least
theoretically, uphold and administer justice, and look out for the welfare of
the population. Corporations, by
charter, are only committed to make a profit,
no matter what the cost to human
well-being and the environment. Thus we
see Monsanto destroying the seed gene pool, oil companies such as BP and Shell
destroying the ecology of the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska, etc.
Corporations fit the Biblical description of
the Beast of the end-times, as they originated with naval trade-
the British
and Dutch East India companies.
... And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name.
Corporations buy governments, usurp the legal
protection granted to persons, and are destroying life.
The TTP would enable them to override
government regulations and take over the world altogether.
The apostle Paul said:
Ephesians
6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but
against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark
world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Some readers may object to Bible quotes. The Bible has a bad name these days, because a group of Bible-based churches in the US have allied themselves with the political representatives of corporations, people like George W. Bush and Scott Walker, and have distorted scripture to gain political power.
Their adherents believe in what I call the "rapture cult", which teaches that life on earth is supposed to be destroyed, and the true believers will be beamed up to join Jesus on a pink cloud. This cult was popularized through the "Left Behind" series, and its adherents are still keeping many Congressmen and governors in power. George Lakoff's brilliant book, Don't Think of an Elephant, documents the deliberate, cynical planning from think tanks such as the Hoover Institute, that engineered the takeover of the Republican Party by this cult.
The Qur'an has likewise been perverted by
groups such as Al Qaeda and ISIS. They
kill not only Jews and Christians, but also Muslims who don't share their
particular beliefs. And an influential
group of Jews preach that, according to the Torah, Israel/Palestine was given
to Jews alone, and that Palestinians don't belong there, perpetuating war and
hatred in the Holy Land.
