Its easy for a candidate to boast about their principles, but it is their past words and actions that determine if they have the courage to live up to those principals. Celebrity and reality star Donald Trump has failed to live up to the principles he boasts of possessing.
During the primary campaign Trump appeared at the Family Leadership Summit, a gathering of 3,000 social conservatives. At the time of his appearance Trump slammed Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a decorated Vietnam War veteran. Trump said sarcastically, "He's not a war hero."
John McCain was a Naval Aviator, who was shot down during the Vietnam War, held prisoner in Hanoi for 5 years and refused to leave his fellow prisoners and accept an early release for himself. Trump is wrong, John McCain's service to his country is the textbook definition of a war hero and we should not be surprised Trump does not respect someone that is willing to sacrifice for his country.
At the peak of the Vietnam War in 1968, Trump was actively avoiding the Vietnam Draft obtaining 4 student deferments and eventual medical deferment for an unknown health problem. Exactly how does Trump's unwillingness to serve qualify him to claim John McCann is NOT a war hero?
While McCain was being held prisoner by the North Vietnamese in Hanoi, Trump was beginning his real estate career with what Trump referred to as a "small" million dollar loan from my father.
Today Trump likes to boast about how tough he will be by sending our son's and daughters in uniform back to war torn nations in the Middle East. Trump wants to send our military back to an unending police action, with no clear military objective, to be the target for more road side bombs, snipers, and ambushes. Trump seems to be eager to send our soldiers into harms way, but where was he during the Vietnam War?
