It's clear as a bell. No other explanation works. At least no other explanation emanating from Trump-World. Trump never loses. Other people, outside forces, jealous types come together and try to pull him down. But he's not going anywhere. He is the Number 1 media story in the world, built carefully over decades of effort, totally resistant to attack whether true or untrue. He fights with the gusto of a young man schooled in the virtues of caprice by his older, wiser and even more sinister mentor; Roy Cohn.
If the White House is not available he already owns more valuable real estate. He was looking for a high light for a man beyond measure. Not the first with endless ambition. But the cult of personality has been packaged not so much by others as by him in a way that appears from a distance to resemble Howard Hughes. He is a man alone, who clearly believes and lives by the idea that he is or must be his own best friend.
It's tough at the top and Donald Trump has crafted a Tower of Babel that has no other residents. It has brought him fame and fortune and the kind of attention that separates him not only from mere mortals, but from realty itself, living in a unique kind of bubble that is not only adverse to criticism but simply beyond it. I know you are but what am I?
He has become the most recognizable face in the world and used it, his ultra quick wits and his ability to proudly ignore the rules to decimate a room full of Republican primary candidates and literally become the last man standing. He is the Republican Presidential Nominee in this the year 2016 and he got here by being beyond.
But the challenge changed the minute he no longer needed to carve the largest piece off the Republican roast and he has been unable to adjust to the larger requirements of a general election campaign which begins with making peace with your Party and those you defeated. In the scorched earth negaverse of Donald Trump it is impossible to turn off the heat and change direction. Let Trump be Trump became let Trump be the Republican Nominee and that morphed backward and forward simultaneously to admit let Trump be more Trump, AKA a Trump who appeals to the nationalistic America First core that is fed up with Party politics and ready for change. Not quite revolution, but to let go of the Party's and Washington politics as usual and maybe a few unfriendly sections of the Constitution and begin a process that will transform a loser on election day into the leader of a movement that can propel the Number 1 Reality TV Star to the front of his own brand new media empire; Trump TV run by the well worn media hands of Ailes and Bannon. Look out world Act Two will be a doozy!
