The neocons and their neoliberal allies in United States spend a lot of time and energy meddling in world affairs, and then using the dire blowback as an unassailable reason for much more meddling. In every case it appears as though some of the volunteer firemen are themselves pyromaniacs, intent on immolating easy targets and then presenting themselves as the only solution to the inferno.
Ignite, feign to quench, fan the flames, repeat as necessary.
The current situation in Iraq comes to mind. There is not much more the neocons and neolibs could have done to destabilize Iraq since the first Gulf War. We sanctioned them, we bombed them, we killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, we disbanded the army and the police force, we installed a corrupt sectarian government, and then we let the fires burn.
Now we are returning in a way that is certain not to extinguish the flames we let loose, and so the incendiary violence will continue as a perfect form of job security for... let's call them "the firemen". You hear the firemen every day on the TV and in the newspapers calling for more action to do something about the inferno, as they and their allies quietly use every means at their disposal to continue meddling behind the scenes to throw more gasoline on the fire.
It is also the perfect analogy for what they are doing inside our country. Within the US the firemen have let vast numbers of people go unemployed, incarcerated another vast number and turned one group in the US against another, while also turning the intelligence agencies, police, "homeland security" and immigration officials against everyone they were supposed to protect.
They have set the domestic fires, and they are letting them burn.
Send jobs overseas, muzzle journalists and whistle blowers, dismantle unions, attack teachers, and then sit back, and watch the flames. Unlike true firemen who have the public interest at heart, the neocon and neolib firemen need and want the flames. They live by the inferno.
So the next time you hear the firemen, like Dick Cheney, lament the inferno and offer to help, please everyone, tell them no thanks.
