Trouble Shooting

Do You Think There's Malware on the Website?

If you find that going to articles on OpEd News sometimes takes you instead to some spammy site, or if you see ads that are obviously spam, then first it's best to determine if the issue is actually with OpEd News or is on your own computer.

One thing you should know is that Google is constantly checking websites for viruses and malware. In years past, the one time that an ad was producing malware, we got several notices from Google when it happened.

You can be confident that we are aware if any issues like that arise.

To check your own computer, here are the steps:

1) Scan and remove any malware

A good free program is at https://www.malwarebytes.com

2) Turn off all add-ons and extensions in your browser
3) Remove browser toolbars

Even before that, Chrome has a built-in 'Clean-up tool' which you'll find by clicking those three vertical dots and choosing Settings. Scroll down to where it says Advanced and click on it. Now scroll to the bottom and click 'Clean up computer' and click 'FIND' next to Find and remove harmful software.

4) A good list of everything that should be done is at:

After turning off your extensions, run OpEd News again.  Then turn on the extensions, one by one. Until it starts doing it again.

That'll pinpoint the one that's causing this.
