If Dracula had been a little more sensitive, instead of waxing euphoric over his howling wolves as his "children of the night", he might have gone on a moonlight walk (or flight) and admired some of the beautiful flowers of the night.

My front-yard zinnias were still growing up until the headline-making fierce November Nor'easter hit Hampton Roads. Now they are flattened, lying on their sides, and it is doubtful if they will recover. Fortunately, I had already taken their photos in all their glory AT NIGHT.

That's because as I walked by them every evening, I kept thinking how interesting it might be to shoot them after sunset. Well, after hearing the lyrics to one of Caroline Herring's songs, "Tales of the Islander", from her brilliant new album, Golden Apples of the Sun, in particular:

A full moon rising
On all of nature's powers
Stars just observers
Of zinnias and moonflowers

I decided to go ahead and do a night shoot. Here are some of the results. To see more, click here.
