Do Russians Ever Want A War
This year May 9 is the 65th anniversary of the Victory over Germany in 1945. It is also a Mother's Day. The US is very proud with its record of women emancipation. This century is proclaimed to be the Century of Women. Empowerment is the word. You can be a mom and hot at the same time. The most popular show Army Wives features a set of hot babes who are all we want from our females, no questions asked. They are nice, sexy, kind, motherly, strong, supportive and photogenic so much that none of us can doubt their superiority. They are Hillary, GI Jane and Condi at the same time and the only thing which is missing is Margaret Thatcher in thong. Oprah will emerge with the audience full of half- witted females and the simple act of, say, refraining from drunken sex will be elevated to the realm of eternal achievement. Precious will rule and Dream Girls will dance accompanied by some silly song like "I love the Oil spilling"' while successful chromium-clad women will praise each other on the shows or exchange corny jokes. It will be Mother's Day.
There is a Russian saying that War is no female but Victory surely is. If there
is something uniting all the Russians born after 1941, no matter where we live
and what we do-that is that we all are Children of the Great Victory and
descendants of those women who lived through the 1941-1945 war, fought in it, survived it, worked at the factories, just waited and took
care of the children, those who died- whether from bullets, hunger, diseases, malnutrition,
childbirth, bombs, in gas chambers, in concentration camps, from
rapes, under tanks, poisoned, maimed by
dogs, frozen to death, burned alive with their children, etc. We are their
descendants even if
they were little girls and never had been kissed before death. We are their progeny. They are our mothers.
GI Jane was never much of a model in the Russian society. I guess there never was any debate on whether a woman should be in combat. It had been decided once and for all that those who created life should not take it by violence. Had that ever come into the heads of some our feminists? Boy, they fight for the woman's right to kill with a vehemence worthy of the space travel. A woman with a gun is sexy, right?
In Russia only the women in medical profession were considered drafted for the military duty in case of war. About 90% of the nurses in the Russian Army of WWII were women. Julia Drunina, the Russian poet called them "the sacred sisters." You know, in Russia nurses are called "medical sisters." Maybe it comes from the old times when those were mostly nuns. At that time they were called "sisters of compassion." My mother-in-law was such sister and then a doctor. She celebrated her 22nd birthday in Stalingrad, under German bombs. Tell that to Rosie, the Riveter. In 1945 she was with the Russian armies marching to Manchuria against the Japanese Quantun Army. On the march through the desert they caught up leaflets delivered by the US troops' supply organization. That organization was apologizing to the US troops that chocolate rations were to be replaced by raisins temporarily. She said that the whole Russian Army convulsed in laughter. US troops surely knew how to fight with comfort.
Women in the Russian Army were volunteers. There were thousands of them; nurses, radio operators, telephone operators, laundry workers, administrative workers. And yes, there were two Air Force female regiments- the night bombers. There were women in deep covert operations, women-parachutists, women, sent with the missions to destroy, to kill, to blow up, women- agents and women- translators. Overwhelmingly they were very young. Overwhelmingly they did not enjoy it. Overwhelmingly in case of capture they faced certain death after rape or torture. Germans did not consider Russians as proper POWs; women- prisoners were not protected by any convention or agreement. German soldiers saved and distributed memorable photos with women hanged at the background, with naked women routed up, with Russian girls on their knees, with women- Communists or Jews digging their own graves; you want more of that? Hey, feminists, how are you going to treat a woman- Communist who was repeatedly raped by the Germans- as a saint or it was all her fault? Don't bother; Martha Corey said that there were no witches in 1692, she certainly was no Communist- but I had never heard her name mentioned by your people even once. Our US feminism prefers queens and duchesses. Rose Luxemburg, a prominent German Communist, beaten to death in 1918 by a group of German officers is not their heroine, of course. Just imagine a group of men beating a woman to death. What a feat, really for the glorious German military. But it was in 1918. In the Y2010 doctor Aafia Siddiqui was literally torn to pieces by the US so- called court system, convicted under false premise and do we hear anything from Oprah? Or from Tina Fey? Or from Madame Huffington? Oh yes, they are busy celebrating the anniversary of Madeleine Allbright becoming a Secretary of State. How about Cindy Sheehan? When Glenn Beck called a woman who lost her son in the criminal war a "tragedy pimp", did any of our female celebs spit in his eye? Did any of them use their considerable wealth to make him cringe as the coward he is? Nope, total silence it was. Empowerment really is strange in this country. It is highly selective.
