Therefore, the final law is that we can no longer allow our leaders to “dodge impeachment” as Ralph Nader spoke of recently in his article, “Dodging Impeachment.” He referred to the idea that “Democrats do not want to distract attention from their legislative agenda, and need Republican votes for passage [of impeachment]. Moreover, they do not have the votes to obtain the requisite two-thirds of the members present for conviction in the Senate,” and went on to say that none of this bothered Republicans when they were attempting to impeach Bill Clinton. Nader suggested that, “Bush and Cheney are such wild and crazy guys that a serious impeachment drive in Congress would provoke the two draft-dodgers to launch a military emergency, strike Iran or otherwise generate a crisis, based on their continual fulminations about the “war on terror,” that would engulf the Democrats and throw them on the defensive for 2008,” and that “such a cowardly position would make quite a precedent for future Presidents who want to illegally elbow out the other two branches of government and our Constitution.”

Forget the fact that now that Democrats have the chance for political revenge they are refusing the opportunity. Think of your future, your children’s future, and your grandchildren’s future the same way Al Gore made you think of those futures with his film An Inconvenient Truth. The inconvenient truth here is that it can happen here (as Joe Conason's book highlighted). We can slip into a fascist state and are rapidly closing in on the point of no return.

Therefore, the "laws" should be paid attention to so the fight here on OpEdNews can advance.

I’d like to think we are more than just reporters, journalists, or bloggers. We are citizen activist writers who sincerely believe in busting apart the status quo that hurts all Americans. With the laws in place or rather, with the knowledge of what has been proven already, we can report on the pressure we are putting on our elected officials to repeal the unfortunate “laws” that exist in our country today and our efforts to enact change (which will still include publishing enlightening articles with newfound information and ideas Americans should be aware of).

To get a boost right now...

We can tell our leaders from “dogcatcher to President” to sign on to the American Freedom Campaign pledge or agenda, which has gotten all of the signatures of six of the Democratic presidential candidates and one Republican, Ron Paul. (Obama and Clinton submitted thin campaign language instead of signing and all the other Republicans have virtually ignored the campaign.) The pledge candidates signed or the freedom agenda bill that Ron Paul recently introduced in the House, the American Freedom Agenda Act of 2007 would: Fully restore the right to challenge the legality of one's detention, or habeas corpus, and the right of detained suspects to be charged and brought to trial; Prohibit torture and all cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment; Prohibit the use of secret evidence; Prohibit the detention of anyone, including U.S. citizens, as an "enemy combatant" outside the battlefield, and on the President's say-so alone; Prohibit the government from secretly breaking and entering our homes, tapping our phones or email, or seizing our computers without a court order, on the President's say-so alone; Prohibit the President from "disappearing" anyone and holding them in secret detention; Prohibit the executive from claiming "state secrets" to deny justice to victims of government misdeeds, and from claiming "executive privilege" to obstruct Congressional oversight and an open government; Prohibit the abuse of signing statements, where the President seeks to disregard duly enacted provisions of bills.; Use the federal courts, or courts-martial, to charge and prosecute terrorism suspects, and close Guantanamo down; Reaffirm that the Espionage Act does not prohibit journalists from reporting on classified national security matters without fear of prosecution.

Hence, as follows is the agenda that all OpEdNews people and all Americans really need to be supporting: defunding of the Iraq War, impeachment of Cheney and then Bush for treason, and passage of the American Freedom Agenda Act of 2007 in the House and Senate with preparations made to override a Bush veto.

If we all take on the patriot’s task, there is no reason we cannot save our democracy.
