Menendez seeks lenient sentence, saying he's now a 'national punchline'

Lawyers for former New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez are urging a judge to be lenient at his sentencing later this month for his conviction on bribery charges, saying the ordeal has made him a "national punchline" despite a lifetime of good deeds that have saved lives. Late Thursday, the lawyers wrote to the judge who will sentence him to say that the Democrat's positive actions through an unusual life spent overcoming hardships should weigh in his favor. Sentencing is scheduled for July 29.

Giuliani faces jail time for defying court orders

Rudy Giuliani is making a federal judge's job anything but easy. The former Trump lawyer defied court orders requesting the handover of his swanky penthouse apartment, Yankees memorabilia, and other luxury items totaling $11 million in assets. His missed court appearances and ongoing extensions are leading the federal judge to consider contempt and jail time for the disgraced former New York City mayor.

Fox News hosts clash over New Orleans attack misinformation

Fox News' Jessica Tarlov went head to head with "The Five" cohost Jeanine Pirro Thursday after Pirro attempted to bash President Biden's response to the New Year's Day terrorist attack in New Orleans. "When you say, 'I'm embarrassed watching Joe Biden,' I'm not embarrassed seeing someone stand up there and say, 'Let's wait for some facts here,' because Donald Trump went out there and he said-- Tarlov stated before getting cut off by Pirro.

Mike Johnson finally wins speakership after initial setback

Mike Johnson finally secured the speakership on the first ballot after three GOP lawmakers initially voted against his candidacy during a tumultuous start for the 119th Congress on Friday. Johnson could afford to lose just one vote and win the gavel. But Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Ralph Norman of South Carolina, and Keith Self of Texas initially voted against Johnson, which would have blocked the Louisiana Republican from winning a majority of the ballots""and handed him an embarrassing defeat.

Trump 'border czar' admits he's just making up terrorism claims

Tom Homan, Donald Trump's pick to be "border czar" in his upcoming administration, admitted during a Fox News appearance on Thursday that he had no evidence for a connection he alleged between the truck attack in New Orleans and the Tesla explosion in Las Vegas. Appearing on Fox's "America Reports" program, Homan told anchor Sandra Smith that he believed law enforcement would find a connection between the two incidents.

Biden rejects Nippon Steel's proposed deal to acquire US Steel

President Joe Biden has rejected the nearly $15 billion proposed deal for Nippon Steel of Japan to purchase Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel -- affirming his earlier vow to block the acquisition of Steeltown USA's most storied steel company. "We need major U.S. companies representing the major share of US steelmaking capacity to keep leading the fight on behalf of America's national interests," Biden said in a Friday morning statement.

Buckle up for Republican chaos in the new Congress

The 119th Congress should be getting sworn in on Friday. However, the Republican Party's inability to act like rational adults could throw a wrench in that plan. That's because it looks like Speaker Mike Johnson does not have the votes to win a new term as speaker on the first ballot. Without a speaker, members cannot be sworn in. And without any members, the House isn't able to conduct any business""including gathering for a joint session on Jan. 6 to certify Donald Trump's unfortunate victory.

FBI: Driver in New Orleans rampage was a lone wolf inspired by Islamic State group

The Army veteran who drove a pickup truck into a crowd of New Year's revelers in New Orleans acted alone, the FBI said Thursday, reversing its position from a day earlier that he likely worked with others in the deadly attack that officials said was inspired by the Islamic State group. The FBI also revealed that the driver, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, an American citizen from Texas, posted five videos on his Facebook account in the hours before the attack in which he proclaimed his support for the militant group and previewed the violence that he would soon unleash in the famed French Quarter district.

With 2025 off to a violent start, Trump makes it all about himself

Barely 48 hours into the new year, the United States found itself at the center of two violent incidents, a dark prelude to what many fear could be a turbulent year ahead. The first tragedy occurred in the early hours of New Year's Day in New Orleans, where suspect and Army veteran Shamsud-Din Jabbar deliberately drove a pickup truck through a crowd before opening fire on Bourbon Street, killing 15 people and leaving dozens wounded.

Trump fanboy Musk enters the 'find out' phase as Tesla sales slump

Tesla reported on Thursday that 2024 saw the Austin, Texas-based car company's first annual decline in sales in at least 12 years. The decline coincided with the company's CEO, Elon Musk, endorsing and funding Donald Trump's presidential campaign and becoming a major player within the Republican Party. Tesla said that in 2024 it delivered 1.79 million cars, which was 1.1% below the 1.81 million cars the company sold in 2023. Back in 2022, Tesla confidently predicted that the company would grow 50% each year for the next few years. That didn't happen as Musk went full MAGA.
