Democrats flip House seat, leaving GOP no votes to spare

Democrat Adam Gray won the U.S. House contest in California's 13th District on Tuesday night, ousting GOP Rep. John Duarte in what is likely the closest House race in 2024. Gray defeated Duarte by 187 votes as of Wednesday morning, though that margin is not yet certified. A recount, if ordered, is very unlikely to overturn Gray's election.

Trump is surrounding himself with unqualified billionaires

Donald Trump ran for president by selling the notion that he would be a fighter for working-class, blue-collar values. But he has selected a slew of obscenely wealthy people to help him run the government when he takes control in January""and their net worths are nowhere near the average American family's. Of the people Trump has tapped for his upcoming administration, six are billionaires and five of them have publicly known net worths. They are Elon Musk ($332.6 billion), Linda McMahon ($2.5 billion), Howard Lutnick ($1.5 billion), Vivek Ramaswamy ($1.1 billion), and Doug Burgum ($1.1 billion). Money manager Scott Bessent has also been nominated for treasury secretary and while it is known that he is a billionaire, his exact net worth is not yet public knowledge.

Republicans are going to wind up regretting Trump's deportation scheme

Whether immigration played a significant role in Donald Trump's presidential victory this November, he and his nascent administration have certainly read the election results as a mandate to deliver on his promises of mass deportations.  Yet talk is easier than action, and if carried out, the costs will be disproportionately borne by red states and areas.
