Why the Current Israeli Government Will Not Negotiate Very briefly, this column reprises several columns that I have written on the subject since 2006. During that time, most of the Israeli governments have refused to countenance any kind-of "Two-State Solution," and conditions for the Palestinian (on paper citizens of the State of Israel) have steadily gotten worse. This column reprises earlier ones and adds a bit of new material at the end. Only US pressure can change things.

Anti-Semitism, Zionism, and Anti-Zionism This column is about the terms "Zionism," "anti-Zionism," and "anti-Semitism," how they developed historically, what the have meant at different historical times. It discusses how, in the United States at least, "anti-Semitism" and "anti-Zionism" have come to be equilibrated when in modern times at least, that equilibration is not valid. However, it has proven to be very useful politically to those forces who invented it.

Response to a Commentary by Rabbi Abraham Cooper of the Wiesenthal Center on the Gaza Conflict Earlier this month, Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean and global social action director at the Simon Wiesenthal Center, published an open letter commenting on whom the responsibility for the present situation in Gaza rests. It was also highly critical of the response/commentary from various world leaders on the situation. I was invited by "The G-Man" to write a response to it. Here is a modestly emended version of it.

"The Two Leading Candidates for their Party's Nomination on the Causes of the Civil War; Not This column is about causes of the Civil War. A) The institution of slavery and its continued expansion into the Western territories was the principal issue that caused the Civil War. B) Negotiations on the issues of slavery itself, and its expansion into the Western territories had been underway since the Constitutional Convention. (But of course, given what he reads, why should former Pres. Trump be expected to know this?

And Now for Something Completely Different: Dr. J's Guides for Healthy Living While I am a a regular contributor to OpEdNews.com on history and politics, for this column I am taking a very different focus. As a career Professor of Preventive Medicine I have published a number of books and numerous columns/articles on various aspects of personal health and wellness. And so, in this first column for the New Year, 2024, I am sharing with you "Dr. J.'s 20 Guides for Healthy Living," developed over time.

A Set of SJ Tweets for the End of 2023. Happy New Year? Let's Hope So This is a set of Tweets (and yes, I still call it Twitter, not "X") of mine from this month (Dec., 2023). The majority of them concern Trump. Gee. I wonder why.

Trump, Hannity, Dictator-for-a-Day, and the Constitution of The United States The recent "Trump-Hannity-Dictator-for-a-day" TV "interview" has become widely noted and much commented upon. This column presents a commentary on it and what Trump really means by "Dictator-for-a-day." Of course provision for such a position is nowhere to be found in the Constitution. But even more importantly, Trump doesn't mean dictator-for-just-one-day. Extending it indefinitely, from that day, is what he does mean.

Speaker Johnson: Meet the Constitution; Just Like the Two Presidents Johnson Did This column briefly examines what the new House Speaker, Mike Johnson, 2nd-in-line-to-the-Presidency, might do to the United Sates, legislatively and otherwise, given his belief that "God" speaks to him and guides him on policy, in the context of the Establishment Clause of the Constitution's 1st Amendment . It then goes one to briefly examine the impact that the two Presidents Johnson had on Constitutional law, in actuality.

'Warnung:' A Repeat This column, like the last one of mine, is a re-run. And like the last one of mine, "Is it Hair Trump, or is it Herr Trump" it is interceded to confront the real-and-present danger that Trump, his MAGA supporters, and more importantly, his U.S. ruling-class sponsors, present to our Constitutional Democracy. The difference is that this one is drawn form a book that was originally published in 1935. Talk about foresight.

Is it Hair Trump or Herr Trump? Redux This column is a re-run of one I first posted towards the end of 2015, on Trump and the fascist danger he presents. Given the increasingly openly fascist program proposals (if one can call them that) he is putting forward, I thought (even though I have republished it previously) to re-publish it again. As my regular readers know, I am publishing more and more on this subject. But a retrospective at this time "can't hoit."

The SJ "Killer Fence," Israel's detector fence, the GAZA attack, Mike Johnson, and "The Devil's Triangle" This column presents an excerpt from my book, originally published in 1996, now in its 3rd version (2013), entitled "The 15% Solution: How the Republican Religious Right Took Control of the U.S. 1981-2022. It describes an electronic "killer" fence, first installed along the Southern border, but by 2020 being used for another purpose. It also discusses the real, very sophisticated detection equip. used by Israel on GAZA border

Israel: Fighting Six Wars, Plus One: A Civil War This column begins with a list/summary of the "Six Wars" that Israel is currently fighting, as described by the long-time Israel/Middle East correspondent/commentator, Tom Friedman. After describing the current facts-on-the-ground vis-a-vis Gaza-Plus, I go on to describe a seventh war for Israel, which may well occur if there is no change in the national government's policies towards the Arab peoples, domestic and foreign.

On the Gaza Crisis, 2023(2): Who Benefits?" The argument that I make in this column is to me very obvious and can summarized very briefly. Who benefits? Both of the two opposing sides in the "assault on Gaza which followed an assault on Israel:" the Israeli Likudniks and the Irredentist Palestinians (sponsored by Iran), neither of which wants anything approaching a Two-State Solution.

On the Gaza Crisis, 2023 (1): Primarily on the Historical Background of Zionism First is a lengthy quote from a New York Times Op-Ed dealing the risks on both sides for the current conflict. Then it presents some of the historical background for the current situation, focusing first on European political anti-Semitism, then on Zionism, and then on how the two forces combined to produce the still on-going crisis that has been Israel-Palestine. It concludes with a colloquy that I had with a friend on it.

On Fascism: Its Definition in its Historical Context, for 2023, Parts 1 & 2 In this column, I publish in sequence the two consecutive and related columns on the subject of fascism and its definition(s), drawn from the European/Asian experience of the 20th century. The threat in the U.S. is real, supported strongly by that sector of the capitalist ruling class that believes that in order to maintain control of state power, they will need to turn from parliamentary democracy to fascism. This is no drill

On Fascism: Its Definition in its Historical Context, for 2023, Part 2 This is Part 2 of this lengthy (for OpEdNews) review of "fascism" and what it is, and isn't, in its historical context. It is indeed on its way to happening here. There might be, as some on the left in the U.S. appear to think there could be, a "Trump Left." Who knows? Although it is not apparent to many observers, some seem to be thinking along those lines. But, Warnung. Don't look to Nazi Germany for an example.

Donald Trump's Lawyers and Donald Trump Lawyering This column is about Trump, his own lawyering (which he has done for years), and his lawyers --- or at least some of the present bunch --- either representing him or charged with one or more criminal offenses themselves. A) they are making some strange arguments and, in the "Jan. 6" case at least, seem to be assuming conviction and thus already getting ready for appeal.
