So, what we need is a strong voting bloc to include Democrats, Independents and, yes, even some registered Republicans who understand the magnitude of this nation's problems. How can I state it in simpler terms than these? The power of the people must throw every Republican candidate out of office; throw every one of the bums out, not one of them can be trusted by the voters of America ever again.
How to defeat them? Here's how.
The Democratic leadership at the top should clearly understand that they must be very aggressive and determined in this massive effort. They know how to go about spreading the word, educating the voters, getting out the vote but they haven't done a good job of it in recent times. Now, they have no choice but to get it right.
They will need the help and support of various grassroots organizations such as MoveOn. A strong leader, so far unidentified, must step forward and lead this entire movement; we have to find that leader before too long. Perhaps we could, once again, enlist the services of Howard Dean who paved the way to success for Democrats in the 2008 elections with his brilliant "50 State Strategy."
In this article I am emphasizing the congressional elections more so than the presidential election. Why is that? Since Mr. Obama assumed office, it's been clearly shown that a president is virtually powerless if the Congress is in a state of gridlock. So the real power of our democracy and the people rests with control of the Congress. Given the dire situation in America today, if the Democrats can gain majority control of Congress we have a chance; if the GOP takes charge, then we are in big time trouble.
Here's another reason why Democratic control of the entire Congress is critical. There is certainly no guarantee that Mr. Obama will be elected to a second term and a Republican might somehow win. That has the potential of being a national disaster but, with Democratic control of Congress, that threat could be largely mitigated.
A totally controlled Democratic Congress would be free to develop meaningful, problem-solving legislation. The Democratic Senate could easily overhaul the filibuster rules to stop Republican opposition. If a Republican president occupied the White House and used the veto against legislation proposed, the Democratic Senate would easily be able to override the veto with the required 2/3 majority of members. In that way, no matter who is president, the interests of the American people could still be pursued.
So, as we approach one of the most important elections in recent history, we must keep that objective clearly in mind. When this mass of Republicans is thrown out of office, their tight allegiance and collusion with Corporate America will be broken. A new day will dawn for America. This will also send a strong message to the Democrats in Congress that the people have exercised the power of the vote and that those who are elected must act in the best interests of the people, not corporations, not Wall Street, not the military. And if any Democrats don't accept that fact, then they will become the next targets.
