Since 1997, Developments in Literacy ("DIL") has given hope to many young Pakistani children by bringing them the gift of education. Literacy rates in Pakistan average only 50% nationwide and in remote rural areas can be as low as 0.5% for women. It is one of the few countries where literacy is on the decline. Pakistan is ranked second in the world for having the most out-of-school children (6.5 million) according to a recent UNESCO report. DIL is an initiative aimed at promoting awareness and encouraging support for DIL's objective amongst a younger generation.
Miss Pakistan Word 2008, Natasha Paracha will be hosting the Developments in Literacy Charity function. Natasha Paracha is involved with many charities and says that the DIl Charity is very important for Pakistan. “There is a need to get the community involved with the issues facing Pakistan today, and Dil is the base for spreading the message and helping those children in Pakistan, who leave their schools for work. If our donations can help at least one family gain education then that itself is a win for DIL and the people who support it,” Natasha Paracha said.
