A quote from http://hnn.us/node/140530 We Need to Rethink the Morality of the Economy
" the perverse lesson to be learned from both Main Street and Wall Street is that there is no transparent relation between work and income, effort and reward, or, for that matter, crime and punishment (ask the so-called felons in your neighborhood correctional facility). You can work your ass off and stay poor; you can do almost nothing and get rich."
We must separate the morality of the work effort from the right to life. We must simple give rich and poor alike food, shelter, healthcare, and education without ever asking if the worked hard enough to deserve it. That should be a given to every living person living under the authority of the Rules of Society as surely as air to breath and water to drink.
You cannot say to a person that is starving that he cannot have any part of the food that that is stored in a rich mans pantry. You cannot tell an old person that it is now time to die because his medicine is too expensive for a billionaire to pay FICA taxes.
The simplest and least costly way for society to meet its obligations to all of its citizens is to make it readily available to ever citizen without ever asking if he is rich or poor. It only takes a small part of the population in society to make enough food, shelter, healthcare, and education to meet the needs of all.
If you also want a car and a television and a cellphone that takes pictures, then you should get a job and earn the money to pay for it. I don't advocate the good life for every citizen. I only advocate the right to life for every citizen. I only advocate that it is not a moral question. It is a question of the intrinsic value of life having greater value than the greatest accumulation of money.
