Are there creative thoughts running through your mind ? Such thoughts as writing a book, becoming a painter, traveling, becoming a chief or starting a business ? If you think of the term creative endeavor or creative innovation, does starting a business or new business come to mind?
For most people, business is the opposite to creativity. With the way of the world today, business is slowly but surely changing. Innovation is becoming the new resource that makes the difference between success and failure, instead of control.
You may say "Isn't business really about control ?" Controling resources and people ? Yes, but business is about innovation and communication, both are at the heart of creativity. Sooner or later creativity will gain more value in business. People and resources need to be managed carefully, so control is very critical in business. Control is easier to teach than innovation, it's an easier skill to find and implement.
Innovation increases in value because it's more difficult to find and use effectively. Are innovation and control equal needs ? Maybe not in the past but control has been the leading force in business since the beginning of the industrial age. Since that age is over, we now live in a service-based information world of commerce. The resource that needs to be controled is information. Information can be managed easier across electronic wiring and storage media. Having a creative mind will enable the important work of business to be creating and disseminating information.
Creativity may rise in importance for business because our information-based economy, the resources required for business are fewer and less costly. Having the ability to run an Internet based-business that can reach millions worldwide, you don't need much capital unless you build a store in a city to only reach thousands.
A good example is Napster, where a teenager was able to create a service that was quickly used by millions. There was also a flaw to Napster: the company was trading in products that were created by others and without the consent of the producers of those products.
The point is creativity, where someone was able to build a highly-used, well-recognized brand out of little resources with a creative idea. Sooner or later, someone who will use the same infrastructure will come up with another innovative idea that will capture our imagination and a big audience.
Internet start-up ideas will continue to attract creative people because the free infrastructure encourages innovation and less control. Control can be a deathword for creativity. Some creative people have shunned business for that reason. In this world where creativity and innovation become a critical element for success, creative people will begin to see commerce as an avenue of expression.
The Internet encourages a creative approach to business. Most resources to support a new business do not require so much control as creative manipulation. With this free and open canvas, creative people will rush in, despite the notion that business is anti-creative.
