Could the more experienced and much cleaner Michael Chertoff, current head of Homeland Security replace beleaguered Alberto Gonzales?
That's what US News and World Report is suggesting in their Washington Whispers section,
'Officials say he's got fans on Capitol Hill, is untouched by the Justice prosecutor scandal, and has more experience than Gonzales did, having served as a federal judge and assistant attorney general."
But Chertoff is not as clean as his Capitol hill supporters might think, as we reported three years ago, before he was appointed homeland security chief. Alan Duncan's article, New Jersey and Terrorism… Perfect Together; describes how Chertoff represented people with strong terrorist connections.
Still, Chertoff could end up being better than Gonzales. A dead dog would be a better AG than Gonzales (there are yellow dog Dems, blue dog dems, why not a dead dog AG-- better because it can't lie. )
Chertoff would probably sail through the vetting process in the senate.
But who will replace him? Which Dick Cheney recommendation?
