It is quite possible Miers was a two fold ruse. One to be able to nominate a true hardliner, and two so he could release the nomination at the maximum time needed to have the news go away from the investigation story.

Look at the timeline. Miers withdraws Thursday, knowing the indictments are coming down Friday. There is little to no media coverage because the weekend hits. Come Monday morning, when the media should be focused on Plamegate, lo and behold there is a new Supreme distraction waiting to take their interest away.

I hate it when i am right sometimes.
