FaceBook is consumerist as it combines compulsive brain farts and advertising and marketing -- any serious writing is ignored so that activism is simply a political exploration of egos in the sense of Hitler's Trimuph of the Will that leverages anger for supposed results. Care2 was pretty good for a while because activists had to seek what they were conc erned about, it was not handed to them by an artificial intelligence machine that "populates" the wall. The down side of Care2 is that it is a commercial enterprise just as FaceBook is, and thus not activist at all, just like FB. To this end, management brought in a "cop," Michon, whose actions slanted towards those with (her type of) mental illness, and Care2 ceased as useful activist tool, which is a shame because it was powerful during the period that management was not in control, but the user base was.
The impulsive nature of FaceBook that keeps anyone from forming complex ideas precludes any improvement over existing activist culture that is polarized between cult-like control (occupy and animal rights) and screaming matches (therapy for the meaningless).
Care2's format worked pretty well, so, presumably, a new site based on the traditional web should actually work pretty well. I did some writing on what such a site should look like, and it remains (after many years, sadly) the most advanced writing on the topic. So we remain in the tremendously deep crap of World's situation, perhaps because we are still so in love with the gratuity of the impulsive brain fart.
