Pig Plague Pandemic

Well, only a few days after "Swine Flu Epidemic" was taken off the Main Menu of the "Op Ed News" Home Page, news is beginning to break that IMO should put it back on again.  Yesterday, I read a report that  " A surge in cases of H1N1 swine flu in Australia may tip the balance and cause the World Health Organization to soon declare the first flu pandemic since 1968, agency officials said Tuesday. 'We are getting really very close to knowing that we are in a pandemic situation,' WHO influenza chief Keiji Fukuda said in Geneva."

Fukida also said,  "Approximately half the people who have died from this H1N1 infection have previously been healthy people.... one of the observations which has given us the most concern." But the same article also reported the American CDC as saying, "A vaccine for the swine flu virus could be ready by October, if research and testing proceed on pace this summer. Candidate viruses have been shipped to vaccine manufacturers.... It's still not clear whether such a vaccine is needed. Any decision to move forward would be based on several factors, including the severity and spread of the virus and whether there's a safe and effective vaccine."

After I posted this information on my site, another radical futurist replied:

I'm sorry but the words "vaccine" and "CDC" and "safe for testing" just do not give me any good feelings or hope as far.  All I think of is big money, business, hush downs and buyouts: the old "do and say as I say because I fund you" racket. The cdc is run by a bunch of sell outs who work for the big money and say and do whatever they are told. Always a denial in their speeches about something and they dont know sh*t about what some of their concoctions really do to people. Gardasil is an example... just follow the money trail and see how Gardasil got started in urgency. It's all a racket.

My reply was:

I just glanced at the Wiki article on Gardasil, and it immediately became obvious why I didn't remember the details of the controversy concerning it. Similar questions have been raised concerning the safety and efficiency of hundreds of other high-tech medications and vaccines over the last seventy years, and the medical/pharmaceutical establishment has been able to brush them off well enough to avoid effective government regulation of the field. Hell, even major tragedies like the Thilidamide disaster didn't result in any GENERAL safeguards being put into effect. And it looks to me like WHO is just as subject to manipulation by the "legal drug cartels" as the CDC is. And IMO, the legal cartels are almost identical to the illegal ones in their basic goals and operating methods -- make as much money as possible with no regard for the cost to the public, and if government gets in the way try to buy it off....

The same person responded:

Thanks for digging out that wiki article. It's completely insane what they are getting away with and marketing the fear to moms and dads of teen girls to rush and get them vaccinated and not taking into any account that this vaccine is not safe and is causing life threatening illness and other illnesses that have taken the livelihood of just starting out young adults. I'm sorry but the CDC makes me sick to the gills and they lie and make a ton of money to do that lying. I applaud Jim Carey and his gal pal Jenny Mccarthy when they challenge this establishment and make them disclose just what's in vaccines of various types. Its a racket and money money money where big fat wigs sit on the boards of foundations, throw money at the makers or drugs and show them how to make all their money in return and deal with the chaos later. Its like push the drug first before seeing what harm it does and they will make so much money on the push that they can then turn around and pay off the lawsuit. A-HOLES. IM MAD.

My reply was:

IMO, everything you just said is a VERY powerful argument in favor of so-called "socialized medicine". This actually has nothing to do with the dichotomy between "public and private ownership of the means of production", but operates on the deeper level of "Which human activities should be commercialized and which shouldn't. I mean, the dangers inherent in mercenary armies and private police forces are obvious to even the most casual reader of history -- both tend to operate by the "Bad Golden Rule" -- "He who has the most gold rules." So every well-run government that I've ever heard of has exerted direct control over military defense and criminal justice. However, health care has been considered a commodity to be bought and sold throughout most of history, simply because until quite recently, the government didn't have the power to actually provide the public with it in the way it could provide defense against violence from foreign and domestic enemies. However, since modern technology makes effective health care possible, why shouldn't it considered an "essential service" the same way as security against war and crime is?

But before this conversation went any further, I broke in with: "Well, the WHO did in fact declare a Pandemic today" and posted material on the official press release, which I assume Op Ed readers have already seen or can easily find for themselves.  In any case, I think it's time to reopen the "Pig Plague" discussion on these boards, because there are ways we can deal with this problem on a personal level, as was discussed in a number of the old threads here....

Let's take the turtle off the fence post. The turtle is the 99% and the fence post is artificial scarcity and a climate of fear. My main activity on the Internet right now is running the "Comparing Beliefs" Forum on the "Innersence" Yuku (more...)
