Kevin Gosztola has co-founded a new website, Shadowproof.com , that, like the Phoenix, has risen from the ashes of Firedoglake.com, where Kevin had written a column, The Dissenter, which he is continuing along with archiving all of the past content from Firedoglake.
Kevin was, earlier in his career, a writer and editor at OpEdNews.com.
Rough Interview Notes
Rob: Tell us about Shadowproof
we're looking to support journalists with paid work.
Rob: How you going to come up with the money.
a combination-- ads and then when we ran Firedoglake, we were pretty successful with donations. We're probably going to adopt a monthly support program. And this monthly support program will be giving people who are a part of our website something.
Baltimore Police were identifying people as "threats" ConstantNatalie was listed.
From that we developed a story.
Our most popular story that we've done in the last week, got over 20,000 views was about an ag gag law that was declared unconstitutional. Was important for journalists"
Rob: Let's get into the basics on what the site will be doing
stories about whistleblowers, protests, the global security state and what they do to monitor social movements.
Another column by Brian Sonnenstein is about prison protests, about being incarcerated, criminal's rights, the "injustice s ystem" currently he's doing a series on a prison healthcare system.
Then there's the column, the BullPen, on America's class warfare that goes on by the superrich agains the 99%
Then there's the community section-- other stories that we're not going to be able to cover-- gives a platform for readers to comment"
Shadowproof mailbag-- responses to mail W'ere trying to set up shadow proof to be really responsive to our readers.
Rob: Plans
to let it keep growing. I have also taken an interest in the last month, trying to bring in more than news reporting-- that it's important to bring in arts and culture-- it fuels movements and also helps to prevent burnout. I've launched a protest music".
There's a lot of room for experimenting. And I've encouraged people to take risks.
Rob: You also covered Chelsea manning extensively. I assume that will continue too, right?
absolutely. That'll be a big part of shadowproof going forward.
Rob: anything else you want to see to the listeners at Bottom-Up Radio
I just want to thank all the people at OpEdNews who were my earliest and best reporters.
Rob: if you could transplant
many of the people who write for the Intercept-- Jeremy Scahill, Glenn Greenwald
Dave Zirin-- brings the intersection of sports and our society..
It's more ambitious and fulfilling to find new people and give them voices.
Rob: are you strictly looking for investigateive journalism or are you also looking for op-eds?
I think there's still a value for Op-eds and editorials but we are looking for stories that are not being covered in cities".
shadowproof.com
We look forward with collaborating"
Rob: Why shadowproof
it's about shining the light into the darkness, not allowing anything to remain in the shadows, also giving marginalized groups and voices an opportunity to speak.
