Interview rough notes-- mostly my questions
you have said that natural gas has motivated Israel to go into Gaza.
Gas to be developed by BG groups
And Israel has restricted Gaza access to water boundaries?
isn't that theft? Isn't the distance from the shoreline that a nation owns standard for all nations?
What are 1.3 trillion cubic yards of gas worth
$6-7 billion a year.
Which would decrease Palestinian dependence upon third party countries.
Is it likely that Israel will end up getting the gas?
israel's approach will fuel anger in occupied territories and give power to Hamas.
Wikileaks documents show Israel's put Gazans on starvation diet.
Are there other international offshore players involved with the offshore Gaza gas?
Tony Blair involved
Mobel Energy-- from texas already drilling in gas fields next to the Gazan territories. Some may be in Gazan fields. Part of a consortium of companies pushing to get access to Gaza's marine resources.
Abbas meeting with Russia's Gazprom to see if there's an interest in developing gas.
What's the history of Russia in the Israel Palestine conflict?
Russia's relationship with Israel has been frosty.
And given the situation in the Ukraine, Russia's connecting with Palestinians could be a real stick in the eye for the US.
in terms of Israel's public relations, it's never been worse.
Is the UK aid based on money being spent in the UK?
yes-- "tied aid."
Your work looks at systems-- in the world-- can you put what's happening in Gaza into a bigger ecological, political, violence picture around the world?
Fossil fuel hubris
You've written alot about genocide? Do you think Israel is engaging in genocide?
UN criteria--
real fundamental criteria-- does perpetrator intend to destroy the victim group either completely or in part-- Ilan Pappe and Naomi Wolf have written on it.
policy to eliminate palestinians as an independent group with independent sovereignty.
It's been argued that using the term genocide to describe what's happening in Gaza diminishes genocides that happened in Germany, Russia, Poland, Cambodia, Rwanda
It's really the processes that make it possible.
What do you see happening in Gaza
situation of economic crisis
Energy crisis has radicalized thinking of how to solve that component
-collective trauma that Jewish went to in context of holocaust--
-anything that happens in occupied territories is seen as an existential threat that leads to disproportionate display of force.
lea. / /.,.ds to scapegoating Palestinians
We can see similar processes at work within Gaza.
occupation has led to radicalization of groups within Palestine
Did I just hear you say that the Palestinians have engaged in behaviors that would fit the profile of Genocide as well.
People in power need to focus on scapegoats.
Your description of the UN criteria of genocide would apply to what China has done to Tibet.
You have a new book coming out
