Tyrus Wong, a brilliant but marginalized Disney artist, died on Dec. 30, 2016, at 106, in the greater Los Angeles area. A Hollywood studio artist, painter, printmaker, calligrapher, greeting-card illustrator and, in later years, a maker of fantastical kites, he was one of the most celebrated Chinese-American artists of the 20th century. The uniquely Asian look to the backgrounds in "Bambi" which have given it such wide appeal were due to his contributions to the film. During most of his career he was unknown to the general public. The award-winning and deeply inspiring documentary about his life, Tyrus, was released in 2015.
