Israeli forces shot Ahed's cousin, 15-year-old Mohammad Tamimi, in the head, shortly after clashes had ended in Nabi Saleh. Critically injured, it was uncertain whether he would survive. He required lengthy surgery and the removal of portions of his skull. About an hour later, Ahed slapped Israeli soldiers right after they entered her family's property and shot tear gas canisters into her house. Her mother filmed it, and posted the incident on youtube.

At about 3 am the shocked Tamimi family woke to the noise of Israeli forces banging on their front door and screaming. Ahed's father, Bassem, told Al Jazeera that he opened the door and the soldiers pushed him aside and trooped into the house. He said at least 30 soldiers were involved in the raid. They forced the family into one of the rooms as they went about rifling through the household contents, throwing clothes and possessions on the floor. The soldiers then informed the family that Ahed was being arrested. They did not give any reasons. The soldiers confiscated the family's phones, computers and laptops. They took Ahed away in handcuffs.
When Ahed's mother, Nariman, went to the Israeli police station later in the day so that she could be present during Ahed's interrogation, she was also arrested, and remains in prison. Ahed is still in Israeli prison as of the time of this writing, her incarceration has prevented her from taking the tests required to finish school. Ahed's father said, "I'm so angry. But I am powerless to do anything. This is occupation."

Ahed's 17-year-old cousin Musab Tamimi was the first Palestinian casualty in 2018. He was shot in the neck at close range in the Ramallah-area town of Deir Nitham in the central West Bank, and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. According to Defense for Children International, an Israeli military spokesman initially said forces opened fire on a "rioter who was apparently armed," adding that the incident was under investigation. The spokesman reported around one hour later that the military had fired on an "armed rioter" without sharing evidence of a weapon. Eyewitnesses did not report a firearm in Musab's possession and relatives told news outlets that no weapons were found on or near his body.
