Clearly, he and others have little knowledge of what can happen during a coup, like the one in Turkey in July 2016. A faction of the military sent tanks into the streets of Turkey's main cities one night to overthrow the government led by President Erdogan, and before the smoke cleared, more than 300 people were killed, and 2,100 injured as factions loyal to Erdogan successfully fought off the insurrection. That wasn't the end, though--more than 77,000 people have been arrested and over 160,000 fired from government and university jobs because of their suspected ties to the coup, and Turkey's economy has tanked.
A coup against the constitutionally provided leadership of any country nearly inevitably leads to dictatorship, and sometimes even to civil war. I can believe that Trump doesn't care how he holds onto power, but I can't believe that significant numbers of Americans really want to abandon our democratically-based constitutional republic for the unknowns of authoritarian rule or widespread civil conflict. The problem is that once you uncork the forces of insurrection, it's nearly impossible to put the genie back in the bottle.
