Guardian of free trade: Egypt has been the focus of empires since ancient times because of its geography. Straddling the Suez Canal, it did play an important role in international trade, especially the free flow of oil. However, anybody who thinks blocking the Suez Canal will choke America is clearly out of their depth. Most of the oil from the Middle East flows east--not west. America's largest oil suppliers are Canada, Mexico, and surprise, Venezuela.
