Revolutionary Acts
Shop in food co-ops and farmer's markets where you can get fresh, organic food.
Support neighborhood gardens and pea patches.
Grow as much of your own food as you can. Bring your garden trowel to the revolution. You can at least have a herb garden on a windowsill. Re-connection with nature is a very important part of this revolution. The connection to smart phones and "stuff" has to be modified. All those things need to become mere tools and not ends in themselves.: good health and a connection to Nature are the ends. It is an attitude difference that may seem trite, but it is the difference between the revolution back to the real world and the current path to the "Matrix." Don't even think of using pesticides. Never ever.
Cut down on or eliminate meat. Go from three ounces (quarter pounder) per meal to three or four ounces per week.
Learn to enjoy making good food. It is not hard to make tasty meals if you eat a variety of fresh organic foods. They taste good naturally! I make all my own bread using only my own sour dough starter, hammer milled organic hard red wheat, and herbs and/or fruit from my garden. I enjoy working with my food and make the time to make bread. If possible, share food preparation and meals with friends and family. That makes it more fun. Eat well and you can smile and laugh at the system against which you are revolting.
Homemade sourdough bread.
Learn to enjoy eating food. Michael Pollan states, "We Americans have always had a problem taking pleasure in eating." He goes on to state that the Puritanical roots of this country, with the attitude that pleasure is sinful, still manifest themselves in sex and eating. Isn't it time to get past that? Eating good food is a necessary act for the survival of the individual and the species. Nature made the necessary acts pleasurable and we as a society would benefit by giving in and actually enjoying them.
Put in the effort to change your attitude. Industrial food costs more in the long run when health and vigor are factored in. Mindlessly eating garbage separates one from the real nature of food and the earth. Years ago, psychiatrist and psychotherapist Carl Jung understood the dangers humans faced moving toward technology and away from nature. The way the average American eats harms his psychological well being. Factor that in when wondering why our society is getting so harried and confused.
Swat the fruit fly if you have to. Ignore it if you don't. Remember that the fruit fly is a "taster" working for you and if it does not die from poisoned food, maybe you won't either. If we are unsuccessful with the revolution, fruit flies may become one of the safer parts of our protein intake.
"Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like an apple."
Some very good books on the subject of good food for health and well being:
Barbara Kingslover's "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle"
Thich Nhat Hanh, "Savor, Mindful Eating, Mindful Life"
