A majority of Americans think we need a "third party", according to polls I've seen. Now ask yourself, if that is the case, why don't most of them vote for one? The answer is revealed in a common question. Why vote for Greens if they can't win? I turn the question around and ask the person, what is the reason why they can't win? The answer is that they can't win because people don't vote for them. That may seem like a trivial, silly statement, but it is true. The idea that "third parties" "can't win" is a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you believe they can't win, and your vote is motivated by practical considerations (the "hypothetical imperative"), then you won't vote for them. If more people followed the categorical imperative and voted their conscience, then it's more likely they would win. So 18th century philosophy DOES matter!
