Accordingly, it could be argued that even if Amir shot live bullets, they were not the ones that caused Rabin's death. Other bullets caused the death. Therefore, Amir should be convicted of attempted murder, and not of murder.
If the request for new trial and the new trial are successful, and Amir is convicted of attempted murder, Amir would be released next year. If such efforts fail, and the current murder conviction stands, Amir would spend the rest of his life in prison.
When asked what she thought regarding the chances that an Israeli court would face the truth in the matter, which amounted to indictment of the Shin-Bet in the assassination of the prime minister, the young attorney answered - zilch!
Regardless, a request for a new trial would be important for educating another generation of Israelis regarding the true facts in Rabin's assassination, regarding corruption of the Israeli courts, and regarding the true nature of the regime in Israel today.
Separately, an Israeli court today finally convicted former Prime Minster Ehud Olmert of taking bribes. In a previous bribes trial, the court engaged in judicial acrobatics to acquit Olmert. However, in today's case, it became evident that another acquittal would make the court look ridiculous.
Given corruption of the Israeli courts, one cannot expect an Israeli court to reach the truth in the matter of Rabin's assassination of its own accord, only under duress... Ideally, that would be the case in a request for new trial of Yigal Amir!
