On the subject of progressive taxation, which is at the core of McCain's accusations against Obama, Roosevelt is forceful and specific. He promotes not only a progressive income tax but a progressive inheritance tax, the so-called death tax that has become a conservative pinata.
All of this might matter to Republicans if they didn't treat History books the same way they treat Science books. No, fruit fly research is not silly and pointless and, no, saying Teddy Roosevelt is your hero doesn't make you a maverick.
For the record, it turns out that Teddy Roosevelt sounds more like Teddy Kennedy than John McCain.
