And, my heart broke.
In 2004, I saw my soul fall down and die.
Then, a couple of years later, I heard about another skinny kid from Chicago, Class of '61. He had a funny name. He had student loans, just like me. He didn't have a trust fund, either, just like me. And, like Al Pacino in Scarface, all he had in this world was his balls and his word, and he wasn't breaking them for anybody.
Just like me.
For the first time in my life, I found myself opening my wallet, and doing more than simply chanting, "Yes, we can."- I found myself writing a check every month, to keep the doors of the local Democratic headquarters open. I found myself pulling out my bank card and typing in the numbers at www.barackobama.com. And, last night, I found tears of joy rolling down my cheeks, when the victory was won.
Yep.
Now, it's really America.
