The citizenry of rebels that propelled itself into world leadership with the brash assertion that we could have the best of everything now meekly accepts less. That we have forgotten the pride we once took in our public institutions is a national tragedy. There is no more American idea than that which teaches us that we are free to advance our interests as we see fit. That is the business of the citizen. If we choose a for profit form of “socialism” called insurance, that’s our business. If we choose a non-profit form of “socialism” called public education, that’s our business too.
The tragedy is that we have brainwashed ourselves into believing that it is not our business. Politically, rightwing simply means that we are free to do as we see fit. Our only obligation when choosing between private and public and between profit and non-profit is to decide what works best, not restrict our choices to those that conform to the propaganda of the Cold War.
What is “un-American” and definitely neither rightwing nor conservative is the recent idea that we do not have the right to chose non-profit or public solutions.
Unable to connect with his heritage of rightwing socialism, my buddy chokes on political phobias and is unable to say what he really believes; that we need public funding for college. Instead, he can only blame “them”.
As for myself, I don’t have that problem. With absolutely no hesitation, I yell “Go Owls!” in the Texan night.
