Or will the debate about Phil Robertson's views lead other Bible-thumpers to rally around him and his views, as Huckabee has?
We'll have to wait to see how the controversy plays out.
In the meantime, though, I'd prefer to see the old Bible-thumper's views debated in the public arena, as his views are being debated. I'm afraid that many other Bible-thumpers hold similar views, although I imagine that not all others who hold similar views would express them as crudely as Phil Robertson does. For example, Huckabee might not express himself as crudely.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
As everybody knows, the Hebrew Bible and the Christian New Testament were composed in the ancient world. For this reason, they should be carefully interpreted.
War was a way of life in the ancient world. As a result, slavery was common in the ancient world, because the victors in wars often enslaved the defeated -- if they did not kill them in the spirit of genocide.
In the ancient Greek and Roman world, it was common for a man of a certain standing to be married to a woman and have children, but also to pursue other sexual activities, including sexual activities with teenage slave boys.
