In an earlier article, Self-Expression Versus Actual Effectiveness in Voting, we provided an example in which IRV fails to elect the candidate who best fulfills the wishes of the voters and it is not hard to see that IRRV would be likely to instead make the right choice that conforms to aggregate voter intent.
IRRV does seem to be an improvement over IRV but is there anything wrong with IRRV? It is every bit as complicated and that is not really a good thing. But another possible fault is worth mention.
In an earlier article, Neither Positive nor Negative but Balanced Voting, we made the observation that while positive voting systems (like plurality voting, approval voting or IRV) show an undue favoritism for celebrity candidates, negative voting systems likewise show an undue favoritism for hermit candidates -- defined as a candidate that few voters know anything about. IRRV qualifies as a negative voting system since voters can only express opposition to candidates. However, as noted earlier, voters will be motivated to include any hermit candidates somewhere on their ranked list (unless the voter actually supports having a hermit candidate win). Perhaps this is not a major worry with IRRV. Still, I think I would prefer a balanced system like IRBV to IRRV though either would seem to be preferable to IRV.
